Zunka/Chickpea with green onion

Zunka is a traditional Marathi dish which is an easy and delicious alternative to make when you run out of grocery. A simple to make dish which gets done in a jiffy.


1 ¼ cup chickpea flour (gram flour/besan)
3-4 stalks of green onion (spring onion)- chopped
2 onions chopped
2 tsp kolhapuri masala (red chili powder + garam masala)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp sugar
½ tsp turmeric (haldi)
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
2 onions chopped
½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
½ tsp mustard seeds (rai)
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1-2 tbsp oil


Heat a skillet and add oil. Then add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida.
Add the onions and saute. Add ginger garlic paste and saute 30 seconds.
Add chopped green onions and saute.
Add turmeric powder, kolhapuri masala, salt and sugar. Mix well.
Sift the chickpea flour into the skillet and mix till well combined.
Cover and cook on low flame for 10-15 minutes.
Zunka is ready to serve with bhakri or as is.
